About the opportunity:

We're on the lookout for a reliable Operations Engineer to join our growing Technical & Operations department, focusing on the North or South of England.

Your role involves using your technical expertise, initiative, and problem-solving skills to provide support to Craftsmen and Project Managers in the construction, audit, and energisation of electricity networks.

During the first 6 months, you'll work alongside experienced Operational Engineers, getting acquainted with UKPS procedures and policies. After this period, you'll undergo assessment and authorisation for work under the UKPS Electrical Safety Rules and Safety Procedures.

Your responsibilities:

As part of the role, you may be involved in supervising and mentoring staff to allow development of individuals and improve the performance of the company. 

Suitably Operations Engineers may also be appointed by the company as Assessing Officers, involving carrying out competency assessment and review of individuals to ensure they meet the company Authorisation standards. 

Testing & Operational Duties (where appropriately authorised) – 

  • 11kV & LV switchgear pre-commissioning and testing; IR & Continuity Testing, Pressure testing, Primary & Secondary Injection Testing of protection systems (Fuse and Relay based), CT Continuity, Magnetisation Curve, Polarity & Ratio Checks 
  • IR & Pressure testing at all voltages, including DC, AC and VLF testing. Sheath & IR tests for DNO witnessed tests and audits etc, including stripping & re-capping of cables for testing purposes. 
  • LV IR and Continuity Testing 
  • Liaison with DNO engineers during final connections of LV and HV installed networks, for connection and energisation of newly installed substations. 
  • Energisation of IDNO/DNO LV networks for connection of customer supplies. 
  • Planning, preparation and execution of DNO LV & HV ‘Self-Connect’ activity, to complete final connections of installations directly to DNO networks. 
  • LV/HV fault location/repair, including completion of cable sheath repairs. 
  • Installation and testing of CT Metering wiring to COP3/COP5 and P283 industry standards

About you

Experience / Knowledge:

  • Previous experience in the utility sector in a similar Operational Role 
  • Possess a sound knowledge of HV and LV distribution networks and the apparatus and cables used in construction. 

Qualifications:

  • Current or previous DNO/iDNO 11kV AP/SAP Operational Authorisation 
  • HNC, or equivalent, level of qualification, with a good theoretical and working knowledge of 1ph and 3ph electrical systems at both LV and HV. 
  • A recognised supervisory Health & Safety qualification (e.g SSSTS or IOSH)

  • Ability to work well in a team and equally on own initiative with proactive approach to all aspects. 
  • Good people skills, well mannered, and considerate towards employees and the general public  
  • IT Basic literacy - able to work with numerical data and communicate by email, Word, Excel, PowerPoint.
