About the opportunity:

We're currently on the lookout for a reliable Operations Technician to become a key player in our growing Technical & Operations department, covering the London and Home Counties region.

As an Operations Technician, your role will involve using your technical knowledge, initiative, and problem-solving skills to provide essential support to Craftsmen and Project Managers. You'll be hands-on in the construction, audit, and energisation of electricity networks.

For the initial 6 months in this position, you'll work closely with our Operation Engineers and Technicians, getting acquainted with our Procedures and Policies and observing the job in action. Once fully trained, your day-to-day tasks may include traveling to various construction sites, conducting operational LV Energisations, overseeing commissioning, and handling HV & LV Cable testing and connections of new equipment.

Your responsibilities:

  • 11kV & LV switchgear pre-commissioning and testing; IR & Continuity Testing, Pressure testing, Primary & Secondary Injection Testing of basic protection systems (Fuse and Relay based), CT Continuity, Magnetisation Curve, Polarity & Ratio Checks
  • 1kV & 5kV cable testing.  Sheath & IR tests for DNO witnessed tests and audits etc, including stripping & re-capping of cables for testing purposes.
  • LV IR and Continuity Testing
  • Liaison with DNO engineers during final connections of LV and HV installed networks, for connection and energisation of Close Coupled Unit Substations.
  • Energisation of IDNO/DNO LV networks for connection of customer supplies. 
  • Planning, preparation, and execution of DNO LV ‘Self-Connect’ activity, to complete final connections of LV installations directly to DNO networks.
  • Support and assist Operations Engineers in DNO HV ‘self-connect’ activity, to complete final connections of HV installations directly to DNO networks, including progression to 11kV AP for switching on ground mounted apparatus.
  • LV/HV fault location/repair, including completion of cable sheath repairs.
  • Installation and testing of CT Metering wiring to COP3/COP5 and P283 industry standards.

Operations Technician are required to undergo assessment to obtain IDNO and DNO Authorised Person authorisations for authority to operate on IDNO/DNO networks.

About you

Experience / Knowledge:

  • Previous experience in the utility sector in a similar operational role
  • A sound knowledge of HV and LV distribution networks and the apparatus and cables used in Construction.

Qualifications:

  • City & Guilds 2339, or equivalent, level of qualification, with a good theoretical and working knowledge of 1ph and 3ph electrical systems.
  • Current or previous DNO/iDNO LV Craft and Operational Authorisation
  • A recognised supervisory Health & Safety qualification (e.g. SSSTS or IOSH)

Operations Technician are required to undergo assessment to obtain IDNO and DNO Authorised Person authorisations for authority to operate on IDNO/DNO networks, which can include Last Mile, ESP Utilities, GTC, UK Power Networks, Western Power Distribution and Scottish & Southern Energy Networks.
